I have bought two of these over the last couple of years for my sons, and they are still going strong. The drop on the price for this particular model to less than 40 quid has prompted me to finally get myself one. These machines are not quite the best and a little on the large side now compared to others. They can be a bit temperamental - but less so with the updated software. The fact that you can't play from folders is a bit of a pain, and they use a non standard (i.e NOT iPOD) connection at the machine end (standard USB at the PC end). So why have I purchased 3 of them? Well it's primarily because it's not an iPod, - so no iTunes DRM nonsense. I mostly prefer drag and drop - but you can use the wonderful and free Media Monkey software to synch, do play lists, download album art etc. There are also some other free programmes for doing playlists - which overcomes the folder issue. You really do have to get your mp3s fully tagged to get the most out of this machine. I think that the screen is really too small to watch video - but it does work OK - but is a bit slow to convert the files with the provided software.


I like the ability to tweak the EQ, and that the quality of music reproduction with decent (i.e. not those provided) headphones is good. The new software means you can get the music loud - but with earbud phones which I use half way is normally high enough. I like that you can replace the battery yourself. I like the clarity of the screen. I really like that they still work after a couple of years, and the screen hasn't scratched (the metal on the back has worn a bit - but still looks OK). I like that you can add SD micro cards - which are now cheap enough you can carry a few with you for long trips where 1000 songs is not enough. But be aware that with SD card installed the machine insists on rebuilding its data base each time you turn it on. This takes about 2 minutes and can be a bit annoying.

This particular model (which I presume is old stock) is a version one machine. This has some advantages in that there is more software that works for it (especially the afore mentioned playlist creator), but there are some recent tweaks in the v2 operating system that you don't get.

All in all this is now a great value machine. If owning an iPod itself is not important to you, and you want an mp3 player you can quickly drag and drop your files to in MSC mode I can highly recommend this.

Note for Mac users, 2008-11-10
Although this flash drive is very nicely made Mac users should be aware that it is not fully compatible with the Mac OS. The drive launches a U3 system icon, the software of which is designed to allow transportation of applications as well as data, and this is non-functional on Macs. The flash drive storage partition itself works normally but you are faced with a CD-Rom icon on your desktop every time you insert the stick. SanDisk has just made available a U3 system removal tool for OS X 10.5 Leopard. This seems to work fine although you need to download Cruzer utilities from SanDisk. All-in-all this is a very classy drive. Just be aware of the additional steps necessary if you are a Mac user and wish to remove the U3 system.

For my W810i, 2007-12-30
Decided to upgrade my phone memory (from 512mb), after over a year of owning this phone as I still love it!!! Had this memory stick for a couple of months and no probs. I found out that the W810i can be upgraded up to 4GB, from the Sony Ericsson website AFTER I bought this, but there's loads of space for music , images etc and its for a bargain price. If I still have this phone & the price of the 4GB comes down a lil, then I may go for it, but by then I may have changed phones, so I'm pleased with this purchase.

ULTRA II SD PLUS 4GB 15MBS

Best Purchase in a while!, 2008-06-17
This is an SDHC card not a plain SD so check your device is compatible. That said it works well in my Treo 680 palm smart phone and means I don't have to carry round a separate USB memory stick! Seems robust enough and the little led in USB mode is a nice touch (so you know its in the right way round). Highly recommended after a few months use!
