Had this player for two years now and can safely say it has passed the test. Yes it does freeze every now and again, but just press the fast forward and your done. Fitted an 8Mb sdhc card and downloaded the Exorcist (500Mb) and watch it in bed much to the annoyance of my wife. Have many movies and comedies from YouTube. Excellent Quality Device.

Average rating of 1/5Average rating of 1/5Average rating of 1/5Average rating of 1/5Average rating of 1/5 Constant problems with Zen Creative, 2010-04-08
Although my 30GB Creative Zen is now 1.5 years old and has caused me a considerable amount of trouble, I persevered with it because of its superior sound quality compared to other brands. I feel now the time has come for me to give its final review! Unfortunately, my Zen had about a 30% chance of ever working, so most bus journeys can be frustrating and dull! I would avoid this product, however, the choice is yours...

Currently, it is frozen at a song screen, which is not actually playing the track, and will not turn off. I have carefully followed each of the reset, recovery, or rebooting instructions from the Creative web forum and other sites too, unfortunately nothing has worked.

When I press the reset button it blacks out/shuts off, but when it is turned on again it simply goes through the rebuilding process and then returns to the same frozen screen. After resetting, attempting to turn it off in the normal way sometimes brings up the shutting down screen but it never actually shuts down and instead it hangs. I have tried the resetting process multiple times.

I have tried the Creative MP3 recovery tool and it began to reload firmware, however, it got halfway through and hung up then too. Now the Zen is not recognised by my computer.

I have tried all the steps for rebooting with the hope that it will proceed to reformatting etc, but again the Zen returns and hangs at the same screen.

The only thing it will do is after resetting is it will go through the rebuilding phase and then hang again or give the all too familiar `white screen of death'. Now we are waiting to simply drain the battery...or anything to stop it and try to start again.

Whilst I have been very very disappointed with this product I am not jumping up and down (well, I' m more worn down than anything, sadly). Unfortunately, Creative support staffs have been no help as the problem seems to defy them and they lose interest. When it was still under warranty, Creative would not even consider that the problems I were describing about their product were sufficient enough for them to issue a replacement or refund via warranty. I have taken it into stores and showed it to staff who said they are very familiar with the product and they too have tried to do all the rescue steps they know, and again nothing has worked. My Zen has been having problems from day one but now it seems inevitable that I will have to go to another brand.

I had high hopes for this product. Like many others who bought this product, I got a bad egg! The Creative Zen 30GB failed dismally.

I got one of these for Christmas and so far have had no problems, the audio quality is great, the screen is as good as you'll get for watching videos (including BBC iPlayer downloads), comes with software to convert all types of video. I did have an iPod before this (I know, the shame of it!) and really this is in a different league altogether (think Lincoln City [iPod] and Manchester Utd [Zen]) The battery life is as good as can be expected for a player with a screen this big. Overall, a brilliant machine

overall I am happy with my experience with the Creative zen - and i would consider buying another and reccomend it to others - however having lost mine recently - rather than buy a replacement model - i think i will use the opportunity to try something esle.

good points -

- fairly easy to get to grips with - user interface is not as simple as some others but still only requires a couple of minutes to get used to it.

- it look good and feels sleek in your hand - nice big screen and good colours - obviously bigger than an i-pod nano - but the screen is twice as large too.

- expandable memory too via sd card slot.

- i have actually managed to put a film on there - after much trouble trying to convert the film in the first place but it worked in the end!

bad points -

yes it does freeze often. regardles of how full the player is - it freezes and needs resetting fairly often. I found sometimes it wont do it for months - then 3 times in the same day! this is easily solved buy carrying a paper clip around with you!

sound quality - although good, isnt great - i also have a small 2gb philips go gear for emergencies - and I actually find that the music sounds better on the phillips than the creative then which is more than double the price. (i was using the same headphones too when comparing!)

deleting tracks off the player - this is my most frustrating thing about the player. you can only delete tracks off the unit itself - not through the computer in the Creative manager program or through windows explorer. When linked to the computer it looks like you have deleted files - you can go in and select and delete them - but unplug your player and swith it on - check and the tracks are still there. even if you read the manual it says tracks can be removed via the PC - but in reality it doesn t seem to work. the way to do it is to do it via the player itself - go to music/artists/albums/track - then delete track. then do it again for the next one and so on.

This was exceptionally annoying as I put full albums on the player when i first get them in order to listen through it - i then want to get rid of the tracks i dont like to keep space free. If i put 5 albums on at once - it gets boring and anooying having to delete the tracks one by one.

you can also only charge through the pc -i bought a plug adapter but it doesnt work on this mp3 player.

so overall - its a good value for money mp3 player - but does have it faults. Its one of the better ones i have used - so is worth checking out - but you have to make sure the pro's out weight the cons.

and i'm sure the things i thought were negative won't be of that much importance to others.
