Canon
IXUS 95 IS DIGITAL CAMERA, 2010-08-27 Purchased for ease of carrying around and primarily as a "point and shoot" device for producing good quality photographs, this camera has so far impressed with the standard of results. The video facility is good, and there are many options for a variety of settings. Would recommend the purchase of a large capacity memory card so as to allow plenty of room for snapping away without worrying about running out of space.
There are cameras with higher pixel capacity, but for this type of camera 10mp is ample.
Would recommend it.

Ideal for anyone used to using a film camera., 2010-07-20 Although the G11 cost more than I had intended to pay it has proved to be a good choice and, just about, worth the money. Being used to a film camera I found that the transition was straightforward. This is partly down to the pull out and tilt and swivel screen, which means that it is not necessary to hold the camera in front of your face to look at a vertical screen, (which feels really weird after many years with a traditional camera) instead you twist it to horizontal and look downwards. Much more comfortable. It is pretty clear and the brightness can be increased at a touch of a button. There is also a rather small optical viewfinder which is similar to a 35mm camera. The screen is obviously as large as Canon could make it and the downside is that with nearly a dozen buttons on the back it is very easy to press one of these by mistake. Small fingers would be an asset.
The ISO setting and exposure compensation are on the top and this reduces the need to access the menu. The images appear well balanced and natural, the exposure seems spot on. There are of course numerous features but one in particular is worth mentioning. The software to modify the contrast/colour saturation can be applied immediately after the image has been shot, I find this very useful for landscapes.
There are a couple of negatives. Canon do not supply a printed manual, this put me off buying for a while but then I found an excellent printed guide which could well have been written by them, it is part of the Magic Lantern series of guidebooks. The other negative is the weight, 355grams or nearly 1lb, but it does fit into a pocket without any risk to the lens or screen.
For any film camera enthusiast switching to digital the G11 has a lot to recommend it, it is also a good solid camera in every respect.

Worth waiting for...., 2010-04-13 I have been looking for a super zoom compact camera for a while now and each time I thought I had found one, I then found some bad reviews which put me off purchasing. I therefore decided to wait and buy this new Fujifilm JZ500, blind, as soon as it was released and take my chances because if I had purchased one with a bad review I would have kicked myself if I suffered the same fate. I was not dissapointed! 14MP with 10x Optical Zoom......what more can I ask for.......
Pros: Very, very compact in size. Large clear screen, lots of easy modes including a 2nd auto that selects the correct mode for you, e.g. landscape, portraint, macro, etc. As you turn the wheel to each mode it comes up on screen to show what each one is for making it very user friendly. Also very easy to adjust light exposure settings, etc if so desired. Takes great pics and videos.
Cons: You need to buy a SDHC card (Class 6) to get the maximum record time on HD video, even so it is only 20 mins on an 8gb card. However the std video mode is good enough to make up for this and the length of recording time is much higher.
Overall this is a great little camera and I am glad I decided to buy this one rather than one of the others on the market.

Little to complain about, 2010-04-28 I bought this camera to replace a 2005 model Fuji S5500. Some useful features have gone (manual focus, for example) but the 2500HD can, as the name suggests, take HD video. It's not the greatest quality video but it's perfectly adequate given that this is really a stills camera. Zooming in and out creates a lot of noise on the audio though.
No complaints at all about the camera's capabilities with regards to photographs. The 18X optical zoom works well, as does the image stabilization. The 16:9 format is handy for creating photos for your Windows desktop and the more normal 4:3 and 3:2 formats are also available.
For some reason i had a problem when using a Sandisk 16GB card. When taking HD video, the camera would only take about 30 seconds worth of video before stopping itself. I sent the camera back to Fuji and they returned it with a Fuji 16GB card installed. This works perfectly! I am not the first person to have this problem but as Fuji have supplied me with a free 16GB card I'm not going to complain too much. So, beware of buying anything other than a fuji 16GB card. Sandisk 8GB cards work fine, by the way.
Overall, an excellent camera.

Lumix Not for everyone but great for me., 2010-08-30 I have had my LX3 for a couple of weeks now and I am delighted with it, pictures are crisp, it copes well with difficult light in its intelligent mode and its a pleasue to use.
Out of the box the camera oodles quality and in use everything feels in the right place and built for the job, it has a quality click and feel to switches and buttons that make it a pleasure to use.
The fast and wide lens is the reason I bought this camera, mainly wanting it for social occasions, street / travel and landscape photography. I have a second compact with a longer zoom so the very short zoom is not an issue.
It is horses for courses.
I think the most important thng for me is the results and the joy to use are such that it makes you want to pick the camera up and use it.
Grumbles, it should have had a wriststrap in the box, come on, it cost me a couple of quid from ebay, but it should have been in the package, and no case, not such a biggy as these are a bit more of a preference issue, but the camera is to expensive to drop in a pocket with nothing to protect it from bumps and scrapes.
I have been playing with cameras and into photography for over 30 years, if you have a history or using SLRs and like a quality picture, but don't need a long lens, this is the camera for you.

- Scene Detection Technology
- Anti-Blur
- Face Detection Technology
- DIGIC 4
Tiny but cheerful, 2010-08-02 Such a little camera but takes great crisp pictures. Build quality is quite good, and comes in different colours to suit every taste. All what you would need from a little compact and every thing is where you would expect it to be. Despite its size it feels good in hands, and can easily be used with one hand when taking a shot thanks to good image stabilizer. The view finder is a sweet addition. The zoom operation is a bit noisy but nothing annoying, and true the battery compartment cover is a tad flimsy but after constant use it never caused an issue. For an affordable entry level compact, with great pictures, this is the one to go for.
