Very good widescreen monitor at a budget price, 2009-09-09
Overall the ViewSonic VX2433wm LCD monitor is a very good widescreen monitor at a budget price.

My only criticisms are:
1. the "1000:1 (20,000:1 dynamic) contrast ratio" sounds impressive but in reality I didn't notice much improvement compared with my retired ViewSonic VX912 550:1 contrast ratio monitor; i.e. a black picture still looks dark grey to me, especially when playing video games.
2. SRS WOW audio technology was designed for audio systems with higher RMS output and widely separated speakers, so a monitor with low RMS output and built-in speakers does not really benefit a great deal from SRS WOW.
3. The bundle does not include an HDMI cable, just D-Sub and DVI cables.

Great Monitor at a great price. Bought this as a replacement for an old 15inch LCD and to use instead of a TV for PS3 games. The difference is amazing. Use the HDMI from the PS3, DVI from PC and VGQ connecter for laptop, all produce amazing results. Comparing this to THE OLD LCD is no contest, I have this one set to its most eco settings and its still has to be seen to be believed.

The built in speakers are about what you would expect, so connect use the pass though audio connector nif you are worried about the sound quality.

Other reviewers have mentions the the power light - yes it is bright but I find that it does not really dotract me whilst concentrating at what is one the screen.

Top notch build quality, good ergonomics and great picture.

This is first and for-most a no-nonsense work monitor from viewsonics professional VG range. Yes it has speakers, but you won't want to use them for anything musical. No usb ports, no headphone jack, no phono in, no hdmc, no sub-woofer, no i-pod docking, etc etc. Just a b***dy good panel on a solid and very adjustable mounting (including the all important height adjustment). This is certainly not a multimedia flash panel with a piano black bezel or brushed stainless knobs.

So aside from the workaday appearance of the enclosure (which does have styling in a quiet way) it offers what you actually want, i.e. a good picture on an adjustable mounting so you can be looking at it in a comfortable way. This is after all what you need if you will be using this monitor during the day for extended periods (which is also why it has a matt finish to the screen and bezel, because reflections would cause eye strain).

Though not marketed as a 'gaming' or 'multimedia' monitor, the screen does these things as well as any competitor with a fast response, good colour gamut (palette), and high contrast(Very little bleed seen on a black screen by the way). Therefore it has all round appeal.

On a personal note, we have had this monitor for over a year and it has been great. It has heavy use, being active for around twelve hours a day as my wife works from home using this monitor on her internet business. It is a great product, which once we got use to the step up in screen size (from 17") and increase in resolution, we never looked back.

Combine all this with the solid brand values of viewsonic and the 3-year warranty and this is a very good monitor for this price and size.

One tip, viewsonic don't skimp on the cables as you get a VGA and DVI cable in the box along with the power cord and the phono jack connector for the speakers.

I bought this to use with a Mac mini as part of a move to a desk-based set up, rather than having the computer connected to a 37" LCD TV (and having to sit 6' away!).
The box looked tiny when it arrived, and the monitor itself even more diminutive - particularly when compared against the TV; yes, apples vs. oranges, I know.

It comes with two sockets at the back - power, and VGA (i.e. no DVI, no HDMI). I attached it to the Mac mini using an Apple mini-DVI to VGA adapter, and the monitor was detected automatically - with a gloriously bright, crisp and clear 1920x1080 display.
I also tested it connected to a Macbook as a secondary display; as expected, this too worked perfectly - the monitor gave a warning when I chose to mirror the display (i.e. have the same image on both the laptop screen and the monitor), as the display size on the laptop screen was smaller and different dimensions, so the monitor warned that the image may be stretched - and recommended an alternative resolution to use. Although intrusive, this message is probably handy for people who just want their stuff to work, without worrying about the technical details - and in any case, it's easily dismissed.

All in all a great buy, particularly for this price.
