Average rating of 2/5Average rating of 2/5Average rating of 2/5Average rating of 2/5Average rating of 2/5 Too good to be true? Mine was a bit of a let down.!, 2010-03-20
I had high expectations of this printer having read several reviews, but I wouldn't buy another. I've had mine 6 months now and use it with both Windows and Linux operating systems.
I like:
1) Print quality is good, so is CD/DVD printing.
2) Windows scanning software is good allowing a wide range of resolutions. Printer and scanner drivers are available for linux, if you're prepared to search them out on the internet.
I dislike:
1) Races through ink cartridges which are not cheap, and I am not a heavy print user. (However, rechipped compatible ink cartridges are available and cheaper than Canon originals.)
2) Takes forever to warm up (ie: prepare itself to do something) and is quite noisy while doing so. Even the shortest break between say scanning one sheet then another and the warming up ('preparing') process will kick in.
3) Being unable to find a way of scanning and saving multiple sheet PDF documents using the Linux scanner driver having to reboot into Windows to do this kind of scan when I'm working in Linux.
I loathe:
1) The chipped ink cartridges. The chip says they're empty, but I get covered in ink when I pull them out to change them, so they're not. Know this though, if the chip says they're empty this printer refuses even to scan until they're replaced.
2) Within only weeks of using this printer I experienced problems with the paper pickup in the front paper tray. The paper would occasionally jam halfway through the printer for no good reason. Other times the printer would grab several sheets of paper as one and send it through as one. I cannot print double-sided with any confidence and do not do this unless I feed a sheet at a time, singularly and laboriously. Different paper qualities and weights have made no diference to this problem.

This is my first ever printer and all I can say is .....it does what it says it does with excellent results. Being a new toy for me I used up the ink rather quickly because I was printing off CDs with my own designs and printing photos .
As far as the CD print I was amazed at the reults but I would say the photos wernt the quality you got back from the chemist but where good anyway.
It does some times takes a little while to prepare it self before you can use it but there where occasions when it didnt take so long.I dont know why but it did.
Speed of printing was ok with documents but not super fast like some Ive used in work.
But for home use and with the CD print I was really pleased...glad I bought it.

Good points :- The print quality is good.
Bad points :-
1. I can find no way to monitor the number of pages it has printed. (I keep a track of the usage in a spreadsheet which I update every time I use the printer.) Perhaps Canon omit this facility due to point 2. below.
2. It consumes the inks far too rapidly. After 61 pages (only 5 of which contained colour) it told me the Magenta tank was low. Same warning for Cyan after another 15 (total 76). The Magenta tank was finally declared empty after 162 pages. However, I printed 2 documents of 32 and 38 pages to get to this point. It uses ink when it is simply turned on. So I reckon the figures Canon give for the number of pages for each tank only apply if you print very large documents. If you just turn the printer on to print 1 or 2 pages the ink disappears very quickly.
The manual states that coloured inks are used even when you are only printing black text. This is ludicrous. It contains 2 black ink tanks, yet after printing 162 pages, only 5 of which contained any colour, Magenta has run out and Cyan is low.
3. The manual states that the inks used when the unit is switched on are absorbed by an ink absorbing pad. This cannot be replaced by the user when it is full. Instead the user must contact the nearest Canon representative. Given the cost of getting these items serviced it looks as if a full ink absorbing pad is a signal to buy another printer. Given that my ink tanks are emptying so quickly I am now wondering how much longer the absorbing pad will last.
4. It takes nearly 2 minutes after switching on before it is ready to print. Presumably this is when it is using the inks to fill the absorbing pad. This is far too long.
Summary :- At the first sign of trouble with it I will ditch it and buy another make.

2 good reasons why I regret buying this printer 8 months ago:
1)Quick start takes rather longer than 4 secs-in fact about 4 mins to print a page after you switch it on.
2)After approx. 50 pages of print, all but 6 in B+W, the Magenta Cyan and Yellow tanks are now empty.

Fantastic product for a fantastic price. Very easy to set up. Takes 5 ink cartridges and, best of all, it has the facility to print on to printable CDs, DVDs and BDs.
