Great... when it works, 2010-04-22 I've no idea how this device performs if you use a cable connection to your pc/mac, but if you use wireless it's a nightmare. You turn it on, try and print a document and get the most obscure and innaccurate messages I've seen in a while.
"Printer Offline" - when the printer is turned on and saying it is connected to your network.
"The document failed to print due to an error in the printing system" - er, ok, what is it?
Then when you reboot your PC (Windows 7) or Mac (Snow Leopard) your documents all print.
Thanks HP! Did you actually test this?
A lemon of a printer, 2010-08-30 I'm afraid I've had similar experiences with this printer as a couple of other reviewers. It worked fine under Windows XP, but it's a total nightmare when used from Windows 7 (there is a Windows 7 version of the print driver, and I think this may be partly to blame). Print jobs sometimes don't print until you reboot your computer. This is frustrating, and can lead to wasted paper and ink, as multiple copies of the same document print out. Sometimes, the computers just see the printer as off-line, and I've had to turn it off and on again at the mains to recover it from a hang state where it was unable to turn off.
I also have a strange problem where the default paper sizes have decided to be American - so the default size is American letter. Although I can create my own customer print settings, the default ones always take precedence, so printing becomes more laborious. Hewlett-Packard support for this printer seems more or less absent: they appear to have lost interest now it has been superceded by a new model.
I bought this wireless printer (I chose it as the result of a "Which?" recommendation) to replace an old Canon printer, but I still have the Canon, and I still use it where I can instead of this unreliable, un-user-friendly multi-function device.
Would I buy from HP again? As Eliza Doolittle said, not ****** likely.
Which Recommended, 2009-12-15 I selected this printer as it was one of the Which recommended 'Best Buys' in its class. Installation of drivers and HP software was straightforward with Windows Vista and, when I upgraded my computer's OS to Windows 7, the printer software updated itself automatically and installed an OCR programme for the scanner. Photograph printing is the same quality as commercial outlets and so far I have no complaints.
Pricing is interesting. I watched the printer's price on Amazon for a couple of weeks before buying - it fluctuated between GBP150 and 80 over a matter of days - I bought at GBP80. I understand that there is an updated version of this printer on the market at about the GBP200 mark; therefore, this printer should be selling closer to GBP100 than the price Amazon's preferred seller has it.
Excellent photo quality ..... but very noisy, 2009-12-07 This item was purchased for our home office, to perform general administration tasks.
Initial set up was easy (Vista).
Text printing and copying are adequate, but unable to print cheques so have had to resort back to hand writing.
Quality of Photo printing is exceptional (additional ink cartridge required).
Overall, this printer is good but very noisy and slow to start up.
Avoid this printer, 2010-02-16 I've been a satisfied HP customer for in excess of 10 years, and when my old faithful injet finally gave up the ghost I invested in this new and expensive model. What a disappointment! Admittedly, when all is working (which is not often), the print quality is good - but the ink is ridiculously expensive with HPs greedy chip scheme, and half the time the printer just doesn't register it at all (and therefore won't print) and I end up having to buy yet another expensive cartridge in the hope that the printer wil acknowledge it this time - and it doesn't always, so yet more money down the drain. The wi-fi is also extremely tempramental - I just connect via USB now, it's quicker and alot less stressful. Am saving up for a new printer and can't wait to throw this onto the tip - probably the last HP printer I will ever buy.
