The DVD player that does it all....Quality throughout!, 2010-08-27 Having used the DVP3580/05 for a few weeks now i can honestly say...IMPRESSIVE! In operation the unit is easy to set up and feels quality too with up to date looks, the remote control is small and nicely laid out. It plays everything i have thrown at it so far..avi video or Divx as the format is known,mp3's sound great, jpeg pictures look stunning as do DVD's. I have always liked Philips as i still have 2 older players that i purchased 5 or 6 years ago and they still work like new so from past experience..the players are durable. Using the DVP3580/05 in HD is simply stunning, the upscaling of older DVD's works a treat and there is a noticable difference in image quality etc. Sharp images and excellent colour reproduction and great sound. The unit seems nice and quiet in operation too. On to the USB port situated at the front of the unit...I have used different size memory sticks and all worked perfectly playin avi/divx video, pictures and mp3's. I experimented with external hard drives, I connected a Maxtor 80gb 1st..the unit recognised it instantly, the unit even recognised that the hard drive was split in two(partitioned),i simply pressed the usb key on the remote along with no2 key on remote to access the 2nd partition. Amazing! Philips say that the unit will not recognise partitions. Well mine does :-). I now have a Maxtor 320gb hard drive permanently connected via the usb port. I made the external hard drive using a powered external hard drive enclosure and a spare hard drive. I would recommend using a powered hard drive rather than non powered i.e use a hard drive that has its own external power supply. Also ensure the hard drive or usb sticks are formatted in fat32.All in all the DVP3580/05 has done everything i asked of it and more. Nice to see technology that actually works and lives up to its advertised specification. There is a firmware update for the unit on the phlips website and it is easy to install via the usb port on the player. Full instructions also on the philips website. All in all a great dvd player for the money. If you buy this dvd player and your tv is HD then dont forget to buy a hdmi cable. Decent cables can be found here on Amazon cheaply enough. As for the comment on a review about the player not working with his Sony tv...My neighbour has a Sony LCD HD 20S300 and the philips works perfectly so maybe the reviewer has an isolated issue with his Sony tv. I have hooked this DVD player up to an LG LCD HD tv and a Panasonic tv and it worked flawlessly. Recommended! Note: To turn the philips dvp3580 dvd player into a multi region player to get this do the following 1.turn on player and open disc tray (with no disc in it) 2.press the "set up" button on the remote 3.use the up and down key's on the remote and select "preferences from the menu
4.while in this menu press the following keys on the remote 1,3,8,9,3 and then you should the word
"region" and the number 2.use the up and down keys on the remote and select "0" and press enter. 5.
press the "set up" button again to exit then the process is complete. Please note this might work for
other various models from philips, the model DVP3520..just change the above code to 138931 Hope this helps :-)

Sony
very good dvd player, 2010-06-29 didn't need a a blue ray player but wanted a good upscaling DVD player and this Sony delivers the goods, up scaled films like scarface and some old westerns produces some sharp and bright pictures but you will notice more on more modern films. load up times are fast about 2 secs. overall a good DVD player. I would say if you can find a blueray player for about £70 then it might be better to get a blueray player as that plays hd discs and also upscales standard DVDs, but not all blueray players are equal some are better then others it all comes down to the scaling software used by the manufacturer, sony and panasonic seem to the class leaders

Philips
PHILIPS DVP3520/05 DVD PLAYER WITH USB PORT/MP3 CREATION, 2010-08-20 What a fantastic little DVD Player.
This is an excellent, affordable and easy to use DVD Player.
It plays all formats of DVD and CD as well as music and pictures from a USB Memory Stick and one feature I love is that when you are viewing a film with the black bars at the top and bottom of the TV screen there is a button to push on the Remote Control which widens the picture to fit your size screen.
I have also made it Multi-Region to play all my discs using the advice from another reviewer. It was easy and straight forward.
If you are looking for a good make (Philips), easy to use and affordable DVD Player my advice is you cannot go wrong with this one.

Good stuff, 2010-07-10 I bought this a few weeks ago....and its just the job for every thing you could want from a budget player.
Picture quality is GOOD with all formats....No sync problems with the upscaling.
It plays all avi formats...and the Region free works fine.
It took me a few days to get the desired audio on my external 5.1 amplifier, and using the inbuilt equaliser on the player, It improved my sound quality.
Plays very nicely from my USB stick...no lag or sync issues.
Other reviewers said to use the scart socket to get up and running...then switch to the HDMI option.I did this, and was up and running in a matter of seconds.
I like the OSD which also tells you how much time is left on the movie you are watching....Lots of players dont have this feature.
It also remembers the last 6 movies you were watching, and will auto start from where you left off.
It has a small foot print...about half the size of a normal dvd player.
I have also just bought a Samsung Blu ray player...and the quality on that for normal dvd's and avi's is VERY VERY GOOD.....but it was £30.00 dearer.
I would recommend this Sumvision player to anybody that plays all movie formats (bar Blu ray).
I give it a 9/10 for Video and Audio
The Amazon retailer I bought it from, delivered the player very quickly, it was posted the next working day.So I recommend them also.

Hello Tosh, 2010-09-02 The main reason for purchasing this product was the need to reduce my dvd collection in size & because this plays AVI ,Divx ect,And after a bit of DVD converting on the PC I now have about 4-5 films or a series on one disc & the playback quality is I think brilliant, So for the price + delivery I would Recommend it to anybody...

a combi dvd/hdd/video machine that does all the tricks for you!, 2010-08-16 brilliant machine which is a real gizmo with brains! Does everything what it says on the box, and with minimum fuss too!!! Noticed though slight loss of quality when writing to the hdd in EP mode, but if you do not intend to keep the recording for crystal clear pristine quality, then the EP mode is excellent for day-to-day HDD/DVD recording for your own personal use or library. HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS MACHINE.

Samsung
Fab DVD player - make it multi-region too..., 2010-08-07 Just bought this DVD player and I love it, excellent upscaling and picture quality and looks very sleek next to my Samsung TV. Admittedly the remote is a bit small but the TV remote works with it so it's not really a big issue. I have found a region hack that definitely works (just used it myself) try this:
Make sure there is no disc in the player.
Turn on the player (you can use remote control or front panel, it doesn't matter)
Wait for "No Disc" message to appear on the TV screen.
Press the Repeat button on remote (plain, not A-B).
Press the correct sequence of buttons of remote according to the original region code of your player (it's on the sticker on the back panel of the player).
FF = fast forward, FR = fast rewind.
Region 2 players: FF, FR, FF, UP, DOWN
Region 3 players: FF, PLAY, FR, UP, LEFT
Region 4 players: FR, PLAY, DOWN, DOWN, RIGHT
Region 5 players: FF, UP, DOWN, STOP, RIGHT
Region 6 players: LEFT, RIGHT, RIGHT, PLAY, LEFT
If you pressed the correct sequence, a small white number 0 will appear somewhere on the top right of the screen. The white number 0 of the same font and size as the "No Disc" message, so don't confuse with the red "not allowed" sign that would appear when you press a function that's not available.
Turn the player off and on again, then you can pop in a DVD of any region and watch immediately.
Have fun!
