fantastic MP3 player, 2010-04-21 I live in a family where they all have i-pods and although I like how easy they are to use I wanted somthing that gave better sound quality. I read a number of reviews raving about this Sony mp3 player and decided to take the plunge.
I was not dissapointed as the little sony was fantastic with the stock headphones (apple please note!) but absolutly awsome with sennheiser px300's connected. I switched headphones to the ipod and it was not in the same league as the sony. With the sony you hear instruments on familiar tracks that you just cannot hear on the i-pod. The numerous settings available on the sony give it a sound performance that I have not heard with any mp3 player that I have listened to before.
With this product walkman is back on top of the game again.
Every moment HAD its music, 2010-08-01 I purchased my walkman in Dec 2008 and it has had very gentle use, recharged once a week, used to listen to podcasts or the radio at night - so no jogging, gym work etc not a scratch on it. Sound quality was fantastic and there was plenty of volume for me. You will have noticed that all this is past tense. Last night in the middle of Kermode and Mayo's film review podcast it died. It had done this once before but that time using the reset button persuaded it to come back to life. Not this time. As I sit here expressing my disappointment it is next to me saying 'Walkman - Every moment has its music' and that is as much as it will do. Pressing reset just gets me back to that screen and no further. From reading other comments about Sony reliability (for MP3 players) it seems as though I am not alone. Really fed up as I don't think that something I paid nearly £100 and have looked after really carefully should only last for 18 months. Busy researching cheaper replacements and I can tell you the next one won't be a Sony. It would be 5 stars for sound quality. 2 Stars for the very poor software that came with it and 1 star for reliability.
Quality excellent; functionality lacking, 2010-04-25 Clarity, depth and range of sound is excellent, five stars. Display is crisp and vivid, with very clear layout.
The best feature is the Equilizor, which I have adjusted to give a sound that I love; the bass is immense, you can feel it in your brain and body. (If you're interested, my settings are: Clear bass +3, 0.4 kHz +2, 1.0 kHz +1, 2.5 kHz 0, 6.3 kHz +1, 16 kHz 0.)
In terms of function, I feel the fact that you CAN'T do the following to be a bit of a pain, as you could do it all on my old Creative Zen:
- Create a playlist on the player while listening; there is no 'add track to now playing list' function so you can't line up tracks on the spot, you have to create playlists through the comptuer. Annoying!
- Delete or rename tracks on the player (you have to do it through the computer)
Looks great and sounds superb but lacks function for me.
Good player but with not so good menu system, 2010-04-15 I am overall satisfied with the player. I have had no issues with it, though some functions are missing from my previous Samsung T10 (which stopped working less than a year after I bought it). My Sony NWZ-S638F (same as NWZ-S639 but with 8 GB of memory) is already a year old with no signs of battery degradation or some other malfunctions.
Pros:
- sound quality - even with the supplied headphones which are of better than the average shipped with players. I got Sennheiser CX500 in-ear phones and the sound rules. I have only bumped the Bass a bit.
- equalizer and sound tweakers with many modes (but not so many bands)
- battery life - I charge it once every two weeks with 2-3 hours use per day
- build quality - solid player with no creaking noises (metal frame)
- SenseMe functionality - it detects the tempo of the music on-board and puts it into categories (Pop ballad, Extreme, etc.). Depending on the time of day it has Morning/Day/Night lists with music to wake you up, sound as background or put you to sleep. The time shuffle function will pick up one random year and play the music from that year
- browsing music - It has all the necessary categories (artist, album, year) as well as folder view
- pictures, radio and video - don't personally use them though it's good to be there
- hardware volume and play controls - if you have ever used touch player with volume being of the touch type, then you'll appreciate putting your hand in the pocket and having control over the player without the need to look at it.
- instant-on feature - If the player has been last used less than 24 hours ago then pressing play will wake it up in a split second. The startup time otherwise is around 15 seconds maybe (have not counted, though).
Cons:
- track year is not synced properly - The player won't show the year of the MP3s if you are using it in USB flash mode and use Explorer to load the music on it. The only way to get the year correct is to sync it in MTP mode (WMP, iTunes)
- lack of Bluetooth - with my previous player it was so easy not to miss a call - just pair the player with your phone and on incoming call you can use the player as a Bluetooth handsfree. Really convenient.
- oldish looking menu system - Well, the UI is just plain boring. Even the font is boring with letter dots and angles visible. If my Samsung was a Windows XP UI, then the Sony is Windows 95.
- no games, calculator - Oh, no, Sir.
- pathetic playlists - No possibility to add, edit or organize playlists from the player. You can sync a playlist from PC then play it. That's it.
Conclusion:
If you're up for playing music and not using the player as a fashion accessory or entertainment centre Sony NWZ-S638F will suite you well. The player is boring but has good battery life and very good sound quality. Just don't expect blinky UI.
Sony make the same mistake again, 2010-08-20 A beautiful MP3 and video player but alas difficult to download iplayer programmes and impossible to download audiobooks from audible. So if you want to listen to music only, this is the machine for you, otherwise be prepared to curse the company as you attempt to download tv programmes (you will get there in the end but it is truely not easy). Why doesn't sony sort out these problems before they introduce a product :-(
